What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic science concerns itself with the relationship between the structure (primarily the spine) and the function (primarily coordinated by the nervous system) of the human body as that relationship affects the restoration and preservation of health. The primary objective of a Chiropractor is to detect and reduce the vertebral subluxation complex.
What is a vertebral subluxation complex?
A vertebral subluxation is a complex of functional and/or pathological articular changes that compromises neural integrity and influences organ system function and general health. This includes any alteration of the biomechanics and physiological dynamics of the contiguous spinal structures. These alterations cause neuronal, vascular, biochemical, and osseous disturbances. Vertebral subluxations may occur in the human body as a result of physical trauma, mental/emotional duress, and/or repetitious or prolonged stress.
How does the Doctor of Chiropractic manage vertebral subluxations?
The Doctor of Chiropractic is a health care provider trained to utilize specific scientific techniques and procedures to detect, analyze, and correct the vertebral subluxation. Once detected, the chiropractor performs specific vertebral adjustments to reduce the subluxation complex. The intent is to restore mobility to a restricted joint and/or return the segment to normal juxtaposition. This process removes neurological distress allowing the body to return to an improved state of physiological functioning.
What types of musculoskeletal conditions do Chiropractors treat?
Chiropractic care has proven to be effective in the treatment of many common ailments including: sprains and strains of neck and back, headaches, low back pain, middle and upper back pain, neck pain, shoulder and arm pain, sciatic pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, whiplash, dizziness, joint stiffness, muscle spasms, numbness and tingling, chronic tension, joint injury, arthritic pain and many other common health issues.
